What not to write in a Venmo caption

A funny note should still make sense to the person receiving it. Keep these out:

• Jokes that misrepresent the payment. Name the dinner, rent, or ride instead of suggesting the money is for something illegal.
• Private details. Leave out addresses, account numbers, and personal information about your friend.
• Anything your friend wouldn't want shared. A note that feels funny in your group chat might read differently to someone else.

Check the payment audience before sending. With Public or Friends selected, the note, names, and timestamp are shared with that audience; Private limits visibility to payment participants. Venmo uses the more restrictive setting between participants. See Venmo's privacy settings for details.

Venmo can review payments and ask for more information. Its payment review guidance doesn't provide a list of joke words that automatically trigger a hold.
