The formula, and where you should land
This calculator uses the classic follower-based formula: a post's likes plus its comments, divided by followers, times 100. On that measure, most Instagram accounts sit between 1% and 3%, a rate of 3% to 6% counts as good, and anything above 6% is excellent. Account size matters enormously here, because a 2,000-follower account with a tight community will routinely post rates that a 500,000-follower brand could never reach. Always benchmark against accounts of a similar size, not against the platform as a whole.
Follower-based versus reach-based rates
Dividing by followers measures how engaged your whole audience is, including the people Instagram never showed the post to. Dividing by reach instead measures how compelling the post was to those who actually saw it, which is why reach-based rates come out several times higher for the same post. Neither is wrong. Follower-based rates are the standard for comparing accounts and pitching brands, while reach-based rates are better for judging individual pieces of content.
Turn the number into decisions
The real value of an engagement rate is spotting outliers. Calculate it per post across your last month, and the posts sitting well above your average are telling you exactly which formats, topics, and hooks your audience responds to. Doing that by hand gets old fast, which is where social media analytics can track post-level engagement for you automatically. Then feed what you learn back into your queue with an Instagram scheduler and post more of what already works.
Questions, answered
How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?
The standard formula is (likes + comments) divided by followers, multiplied by 100, applied to a single post. This calculator uses exactly that, so your result is comparable with most published benchmarks.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
For follower-based rates, 1% to 3% is average, 3% to 6% is good, and above 6% is excellent. Where you should sit depends heavily on your account size and niche.
Why do smaller Instagram accounts have higher engagement rates?
Small audiences are dense with people who genuinely chose to follow you, so a larger share of them interact. As accounts grow, they accumulate passive followers, and the rate naturally dilutes even when the content stays strong.
Should I check one post or several?
Run a handful of recent posts through the calculator rather than judging one in isolation. A single viral or flopped post tells you little, but the range across your last 10 or so shows your real baseline.
Do saves and shares count in the engagement rate?
Not in this formula, since likes and comments are the only metrics visible on any public account. If you have access to your own insights, adding saves and shares gives a fuller picture of engagement.
Should I measure engagement against followers or reach?
Use followers when comparing your account to others or reporting to brands, since it is the common standard. Use reach when evaluating a single post, because it ignores the audience that never saw it.
Can I keep checking rates without paying anything?
Yes, run the calculator as many times as you want. The maths happens in your browser, so the numbers you enter are never sent to a server or stored.
